The first ever smartphone – IBM Simon

If “smartphones” are considered state-of-the art in cellphone technologies in 2010, the first ever device of this kind dates back 1994. Having the size and shape of a cellphone, the IBM Simon, distributed by BellSouth, replaces the usual telephone keyboard by a sensitive screen and integrates PIM applications and data communication features.
Let’s get back to 1994 – at that time, manufacturers are struggling to make the “communication devices” market take off. The most common approach was then to bring communication to what was then state of the art in portable technology – PDA devices.
Many products came out at that time : the EO Communicator, 2 Motorola products, the Marco and the Envoy, respectively running the Newton and the MagicCap OS; the Sony Magic Link. Most of those products were discontinued after no more than 2 years.
Most of those products featured large displays, and a notebook oriented usability : they were basically PDAs with integrated (radio-)modems. The Simon showcases a totally different idea of what a communicating device could be : instead of integrating a modem in a PDA, it would integrate a PDA and a modem in a cellphone.
The user interface is pretty clear and apparently pleasant to use. It is a charming exemple of a early 90’s graphic interface. I see it as mac OS 1.0 in a narrow screen : B&W icons, background patterns and round-angles boxes populate the . After some delays it was sold by BellSouth in 1994 in 190 U.S. cities in 15 states and was originally priced at $899.

Let’s face it : the Simon didn’t last any longer than it’s competitors. Maybe all of them were ahead of their time, but most likely they were all huge, heavy, and horribly expensive, both on the purchase price side and on the communication service subscription side.

Anyway, as the first actual “SmartPhone” in history, the Simon is a very interesting machine. As it is also quite rare, i’m very proud i own one in my collection.

So everyone and their mother in the business has forever been asking the question, “So what is the future of the ad agency?”

Clay Shirky wrote a damn good article about the future of newspapers. Substitute “Newspapers” with “Ad Agencies” and advertising grunts everywhere will have plenty food for thought…

“When reality is labeled unthinkable, it creates a kind of sickness in an industry.”

Clay makes the point that the world doesn’t need newspapers, it needs good journalism.

Similarly, you could argue that brands don’t need ad agencies per se. What they need are creative ways to make them more compelling to their target markets.

But which of the large agencies, with their hyper-entrenched business models and institutional shareholders, would ever dare mention that in a pitch?

Danah Boyd: How Technology Makes A Mess Of Privacy and Publicity

Today at SXSWi, keynote speaker Danah Boyd took the stage to talk about privacy and publicity, and how they intertwine online. Boyd is a Social Media Researcher at Microsoft Research New England, and has studied this space extensively for years. It was a compelling talk that challenged the notion that personal information is on a binary spectrum of public or private. To help underscore her points, she recalled and discussed a number of major privacy blunders from Facebook and Google. You can find my notes from the presentation below.

Boyd says that privacy is not dead, but that a big part of our notion of privacy relates to maintaining control over our content, and that when we don’t have control, we feel that our privacy has been violated. This has happened a few times recently.

How The Buzz Launch Failed

As a first example Boyd brought up Google Buzz. She says that nothing with the launch was technologically wrong — you could opt out of Buzz, elect to hide your friend list, and so on. But the service resulted in a PR disaster because Google made non-technical mistakes, doing things that didn’t meet user expectations:

Google integrated a public facing system in one of the most private systems you can imagine. Lots of people thought Google was exposing their email to the world.
Google assumed people would opt out if users didn’t want to participate. “I can’t help but notice that more technology companies think it’s ok to expose people tremendously and then back pedal when people flip out”, she says.
You want to help users understand the proposition. You need to ease them in, invite them to contribute their content.

Boyd says that years ago, researchers noticed people in a chat room would often ask “A/S/L” (age, sex, location). So some services, looking to streamlines things a bit, started building user profiles that had this information. What they failed to understand is that this “A/S/L” was a sort of chatroom icebreaker. Users lost that, and putting that information in a profile — even if they would have shared it to answer that chat message — could creep them out.

With Buzz, Google found the social equivalent to the famous “uncanny valley” (where things seem almost natural, but aren’t quite close enough, so they’re creepy). They collapsed articulated networks (email) and assumed it was a personal network.

Boyd then transitioned to talk a bit about the fuzzy lines between what is public and private. She says that just because people put material in public places doesn’t mean it was meant to be aggregated. And just because something is publically accessible doesn’t mean people want it to be publicized.

The Facebook Privacy Fail
Boyd’s second case study was Facebook’s privacy changes in December, when Facebook changed ‘everyone’ to the default. We’ve written extensively on this fiasco, which may take years to really reveal the extent of the damage it has done.

Facebook said 35% of users had read the new privacy documentation and changed something in the privacy settings. Facebook thinks this is a good thing, but it means 65% of population made their content public. Boyd has asked non-techie users to tell her what they thought their settings were. She has yet to find a single person whose actual privacy settings matched what they thought they were.
Boyd recounted a story of a young woman who had moved far away from an abusive father. The young woman talked with her mother (who had moved with her) about possibly joining Facebook. They sat down to make the content as private as possible, which worked well. But in December, the young woman clicked through Facebook’s privacy dialog (as most people did) and had no idea her content was public. She only found out when someone who should not have seen the content told her.

Boyd then discussed how different groups of people think about privacy. She says that teenagers are much more conscious about what they have to gain by being in public, whereas adults are more concerned about what they have to lose.

As an example, Boyd talked about a teenage girl who often put risqué, sometimes illegal content online. When Boyd asked why she’d want to do something, the girl replied, “I want to get a modeling contract just like Tila Tequilla”. Her calculation wasn’t about what she could potentially lose, but rather what she stood to gain.

Boyd says that most techies think about Personally Identifiable Information, but that the vast majority of people are thinking about personally embarrassing information. People often share private information with their friends in part because it allows them to bond, it makes them somewhat vulnerable and establishes trust. But when it’s through technology (e.g. Facebook’s public by default setting) it’s a huge technology fail.

Boyd also called out the presence of racism in social media. On the night of the BET awards last year, all of the trending topics were dominated by terms relating to the event and the black community. In response, some Twitter users made very racist comments — clearly even these open communication platforms are still prone to hate.

To conclude the talk, Boyd pointed out some of the challenges we will continue to face with regard to privacy online. She asks whether or not teachers can be expected to maintain a professional, pristine presence online — something that is very difficult to do while leading a normal life.

Ultimately, she says, “neither privacy nor publicity is dead, but technology will continue to make a mess of both.” We’ve been looking at privacy and publicity as a black-or-white attribute for content, when really it’s defined by context and the implications of what we’ve chosen to share.

Empreendedorismo em cena

Este post fez-me recordar que, em tempos idos (10 anos atrás) escrevi uma tese de mestrado em economia dedicada à fundamental questão “porque é que umas regiões se desenvolvem mais do que outras”.

Após a defesa, em vez de seguir o caminho “normal” de tentar publicar uns artigos ou mesmo um livro, decidi uma via alternativa: criar um portal (www.carloscerqueira.com) dedicado a esta área e permitir o download gratuito da tese, num pdf desbloqueado. A tarefa envolveu alguns meses da minha vida, a aquisição de uns calhamaços sobre deamweaver (sabia zero sobre programação Web) e uma boa dose de entusiasmo. Note-se que em 2001 as ferramentas de blogues ainda não estavam popularizadas, e sobretudo, eram bastantes rudimentares em termos de funcionalidades.

O site esteve online durante cerca de 4 anos, com muitos visitantes de todo o mundo lusófono (a tese está escrita em português), até que por falta de actualização e uma dificuldade do host provider aceitar o meu pagamento via cartão de crédito (mas tinha saldo, garanto…), decidi fechar a loja. By the way, o domínio agora é usado neste site, se alguém souber chinês (ou será japonês…), por favor, elucide-me sobre o que é que ando (pelos vistos…) a vender online.

De todo o modo, o gosto por esta questão nunca mais me abandonou, e alguns autores que consultei passaram a ser seguidos com grande entusiasmo (Krugmam, Porter, Romer, Scott, Storper, Benko, Lipietz…e Richard Florida).

É bastante conhecido o que Florida escreveu sobre este ponto. Talento, tecnologia e tolerância seriam os pontos chaves para uma região se desenvolver e, lá está, ser um ecossistema de inovação, cluster, meio inovador ou o termo que se queira usar. A tolerância, mesmo na obra de Florida, tem sido também desenvolvida como uma “espécie” de qualidade de vida que atrairia a “classe criativa” ou os talentos.

A soma de todos este factores é que consegue criar uma “entrepeneurship scene”, o ponto em que passa algo a ser óbvio para todos: para quem quiser começar uma empresa, aquele é o “o” lugar para fazê-lo.

E em Portugal? Onde é que há uma “entrepeneurship scene”?

Em Coimbra, definitivamente, há uma. E os seus argumentos são conhecidos:

Uma Universidade que tem gerado das mais importantes empresas tecnológic as;
A 2ª melhor incubadora do mundo (declaração de interesses: trabalho no edifício ao lado) e uma rede de entidades que apoia empresas e empreendedores.
Um ambiente vibrante de oportunidades e negócios.

Este último ponto não é propriamente tangível nem mensurável. É sim, algo que quando se começa a sentir que “está no ar”, então sabemos que temos uma verdadeira “cena de empreendedorismo”.

Green Tone Bits: Session #11 (First Anniversary)

The eleventh Green Tone Bits session is just a few days away. Happy anniversary!
Mark your calendars: Friday, 19 February 2010, from 22:30 to 02:00 GMT.

Our first anniversary is here. For the past year, we’ve been showcasing and sharing some of the best free digital music from all around the globe, proving that - even though there are still some strong non-believers - free music can be just as good as its paid counterpart. We showed that “free” doesn’t necessarily mean “cheap” and that eksprimentell-teknisk-avantgarde-saer-dop-steikbra-metal-musikk isn’t the only music genre being released by netlabels. The bottom line: quality music can be free - and legal.

We had a reasonably good (live) attendance at the sessions. Online, people from several countries (the US, Germany, France, Italy, Brazil, the UK, etc.) tuned in to the live streaming and/or downloaded the session’s playlists. Still, we believe we can reach a lot more people.

So, next friday - February 19 - we’ll be celebrating the Green Tone Bits’ accomplishments and future - and free music in general. Ogâmico [map] is still our headquarters - and there will even be a special drink to match the event!

Also, as usual: listen to the live streaming on the site if you can’t make it; if you do make it to Ogâmico, bring your sad, empty MP3 player and we’ll happily transfer the previous sessions’ playlists.

O Orçamento Silva

A família Silva é uma família portuguesa típica: recebe mensalmente os seus salários e faz os seus gastos. O problema é que a família Silva gasta mais do que o que recebe. O que lhes está a causar um problema. Convém perceber porquê.

Para tal veja-se em detalhe as características do problema (assuma-se, por facilidade de contas, que são 12 salários no ano e não 14):

a famíla Silva em conjunto consegue produzir/ganhar 1000€ mensais. Tem a garantia que os recebe porque senão leva o contribuinte dos seus ordenados a tribunal e se o contribuinte (a empresa onde trabalham) não pagar, vai preso.
isto significa que o Produto Interno Silva é de 12 x 1000€ = 12.000€
o problema é que a família Silva gastou no ano 2000 mais do que o que ganhava. Todos os meses gastou 1.100€, ou seja, mais 10% do que o que ganhava. Chegou ao fim do ano e tinha gasto 12.000€ + 1.200€ = 13.200€, ou seja, mais 10% do que do Produto Interno Silva. O Défice Silva Anual nesse ano foi de 10% face ao Produto Interno Silva.
para fazer face ao Défice Anual Silva do ano em causa, a família Silva arranjou um empréstimo de 1.200€ que o Banco Internacional lhe concedeu contra a assinatura de uma letra no mesmo valor. A Dívida Privada Silva, no ano de 2001, passou assim a ser de 1.200€, 10% do Produto Interno Silva
no início de 2001, a família Silva resolveu precaver-se e fazer um Orçamento, o Orçamento Silva. Projectou as suas despesas, não se esquecendo de incluir o investimento numa nova TV LCD. Para isso assumiu que iria haver um Défice Orçamental Silva de 10%. Ou seja, que iria gastar 13.200€ mais 1.200€ do que os 12.000€ a receber. Iriam cobrir o Défice Orçamental Silva de 10% com mais um empréstimo do Banco Internacional, ficando assim com uma Dívida Privada Silva de 20% (2.400€) do Produto Interno Silva
o Banco Internacional concedeu o empréstimo à família Silva (contra a assinatura de outra letra), mas um amigo da família (o Fernando Manuel Inácio, FMI para os amigos) não deixou de avisar que não era conveniente manter os Défices Orçamentais Silva acima dos 3% porque isso levaria rapidamente a uma Divida Silva de mais de 50% do Produto Interno Silva (ie. a uma divida de 6.000€) que seria dificil de pagar tendo em conta o Produto Interno Silva. A famíla Silva argumentou que este ano era por uma boa causa: o investimento numa TV LCD iria com certeza permitir um crescimento do Produto Interno Silva porque toda a família estaria mais feliz e portanto mais produtiva.
acontece que, chegados a 2002, na altura de se fazer o Orçamento Silva para esse ano, o “investimento” na TV LCD não tinha tido retornos (em verdade, não era esperado que tivesse) e não contribuiu em nada para a produtividade da famíla Silva. Nesse ano o Produto Interno Silva continuaria a ser de 12.000€. O Défice Anual Silva de 2001 tinha sido de facto de 10% (1.200€) do Produto Interno Silva e a Divida Privada Silva tinha passado para 20% (2.400€) do Produto Interno Silva.
apesar dos conselhos do amigo FMI, a família Silva fez um Orçamento Silva para 2002 que incluía um novo investimento, desta vez em roupa de marca que iria com certeza trazer retornos para a família porque esta seria mais feliz. Esse investimento significava que iria have mais um ano em que o Défice Orçamental Silva iria ser de 10% do Produto Interno Silva, mais 1.200€ do que o que ganhavam com o Produto Interno Silva, valor esse que iria ser coberto por mais um empréstimo do Banco Internacional (contra assinatura de uma letra). Chegando ao fim do ano, o Défice Anual Silva seria mais uma vez de 10% do Produto Interno Silva e a Divida Privada Silva passaria para os 30% do Produto Interno Silva.
o problema actual deriva do facto de a familia Silva ter feito o atrás descrito durante 10 anos: todos os anos fez um Orçamento Silva Anual com um valor 10% superior ao Produto Interno Silva com fins de “investimento”, acabando por acumular uma Dívida Privada Silva de 100% do Produto Interno Silva. Ou seja, a família Silva encontra-se neste momento perante a situação em que, caso o Banco Internacional o exigisse, teria de entregar todo o Produto Interno Silva do ano corrente, ficando sem nada para comer.
a família Silva tem mais investimentos para fazer e por isso pediu ao Banco Internacional mais um empréstimo para cobrir os 10% a mais que o Défice Orçamental Silva apresenta face ao Produto Interno Silva. Mas o Banco está renitente em emprestar o dinheiro, até porque um funcionário do Banco (o Sr John Rating) resolveu dizer que se a família Silva continuasse com Défices Anuais Silva na ordem dos 10% do Produto Interno Silva, seria necessário alterar a taxa de juro do empréstimo. A família Silva considerou isto um desaforo e considerou que o Sr Rating não tinha o direito de falar do empréstimo da família Silva nem muito menos de se meter nos assuntos da família Silva. Ao que o Sr Rating respondeu que nesse caso não haveria empréstimo nenhum, até porque o mais provável era que com uma Dívida Privada Silva de 100% do Produto Interno Silva, o mais provável era a família Silva não conseguir pagar as prestações do empréstimo.
e isto traz-nos ao problema actual da família Silva: continua a ter um Produto Interno Silva de 12.000€ anuais, mas já acumulou uma Divida Privada Silva de 100% do Produto Interno Silva (12.000€ portanto). A ter de usar todo o Produto Interno Silva deste ano para pagar a Divida Privada Silva, ficam sem dinheiro para comer. E sem dinheiro para gastar em dois novos investimentos: uma pista de comboios eléctrica e um avião telecomandado.
a família Silva já pensou em impor à empresa onde trabalha (a empresa Portugal, que contribui com os salários da família Silva) um aumento dos salários. Mas a empresa diz que não aceita que isso lhe seja imposto e que a família Silva é uma colecção de malandros, que até tinham prometido fazer mais pela empresa mas passaram o tempo em plenários a discutir qual era a melhor pista de comboios e qual era o melhor avião telecomandado. O que obviamente não tem nada a ver com a vida da empresa nem com a produtividade da mesma.
a família Silva também já pensou vender alguns bens que tinha recebido de um dos avôs (o Sr Botas), mas parece que isso lhe rende pouco mais do que 500€, cerca de 5% do Produto Interno Silva. O que mesmo assim não chega para cobrir o Défice Anual Silva de 10% do Produto Interno Silva, nem muito menos para pagar parte significativa da Divida Privada Silva.
a famíla Silva também já pensou em cortar as despesas em casa, mas os filhos Silva (um com 38 anos e o outro com 25) dizem que isso é inaceitável. A opção de os mandar trabalhar foi considerada mas os filhos têm direitos básicos inalienáveis e por lei não é possível recusar-lhes cama, comida e roupa lavada.
perante este impasse a família Silva espera não ter de recorrer a um empréstimo do amigo Fernando Manuel Inácio. É que ele já disse que até emprestava o dinheiro, mas que não havia pista de comboios para ninguém nem avião telecomandado. E que ainda tinham de lhe dar a TV LCD e as roupas de marca como garantia. Para além disso, parece que o amigo é falador e que é garantido que as outras famílias vão ficar a saber do problema da família Silva. O que pode prejudicar os jantares grátis para onde a família Silva é convidada de vez em quando.

A família Silva agradece qualquer contribuição no sentido de resolver este problema, desde que a mesma não implique trabalhar mais ou gastar menos. Prefere uma solução que inclua uma instituição de crédito que esteja disponível para ser enganada e para emprestar mais algum. É este ano que os investimentos vão dar frutos. Garantido.

I’m not much of a basketball player. Middle-age, with a shaky set shot and a bad knee, I can’t hold my own in a YMCA pickup game, let alone against more organized competition. But I could definitely beat LeBron James in a game of one-on-one. The game just needs to feature two special rules: It lasts until I score, and when I score, I win.

We might have to play for a few days, and Mr. James’s point total could well be creeping toward five figures before the contest ended, but eventually the gritty gutty competitor with a lunch-bucket work ethic (me) would subject the world’s greatest basketball player to a humiliating defeat.

The world’s greatest nation seems bent on subjecting itself to a similarly humiliating defeat, by playing a game that could be called Terrorball. The first two rules of Terrorball are:

(1) The game lasts as long as there are terrorists who want to harm Americans; and

(2) If terrorists should manage to kill or injure or seriously frighten any of us, they win.

So I’m thinking of starting a new web project and was wondering if I could seek your advice. My tendency is to use PHP since that’s what I know and have used most in the past. Though, after talking to a lot of folks (namely Googlers…go figure), I’ve been encouraged to instead choose Python.

Seeing as you’re my favorite PHP Terrorist I was wondering if you have any specific thoughts on the subject.

I still need to write another article on Python, but the short answer is I think if it’s web, PHP is probably the better choice.

However there are some mitigating things to consider:

If your budget is very tight, then you can use Python and host it on Google App Engine. Yes, there are other solutions like Windows Azure and Ning, but I think that above shared hosting and short of slicehost, Google is the best option.
If you only want to use/learn/maintain one language throughout the entire setup, then Python is a better choice. PHP can’t do high concurrency and it’s not very versatile by itself.

PHP’s advantages are its ubiquity (host anywhere), relatively low skill requirements (easy to pick up), and it’s ability to work with other software packages and languages with ease (simple and sucky). PHP is an easy second language to pick up because its similarity to scripting, C, Perl, etc. On the other hand, hiring good PHP developers who can design a clean architecture that isn’t overbuilt or spaghetti is hard.

Python’s advantages are its collaboration for larger projects (clean design and readability), and being probably the best general scripting language on the market (versatility). Python is also a much easier language to learn to program for the first time. Learning Python for the web, pretty much means learning two things though: Python and a framework like Django.

As for Google, I’m not surprised. Google is very pro-python when choosing a scripting language, to the point of irrationality——YouTube for instance. In fact, the knee jerk reaction of almost any Googler is “use Python” in response to any programming question where a scripting language is involved. The reality is there is no best——just a series of “good enough” choices.

Look at the top 100 websites on the internet: about 40% of them are written in PHP and 0% of them are written in Rails…But to me, there is an alternate conclusion, since 60% of sites out there don’t use PHP: “The web problem ain’t that hard.”

PHP may be the best web language out there. But it certainly isn’t the only one. It’s one approach, one that stresses configuration over convention, stupidity over smarts, practicality over elegance.

Definição:

Uma Júnior Empresa é uma associação sem fins lucrativos, totalmente gerida por estudantes, que presta serviços de consultoria especializados, a empresas e outras entidades, insere-se geralmente nas instituições de ensino superior, visando principalmente a formação académica complementar dos seus membros.

Evolução:

A primeira Júnior Empresa nasceu em França em 1967 na Escola Superior de Ciências Económicas e Comerciais, com o objectivo de oferecer às empresas os conhecimentos, competências e pro-actividade dos estudantes. A iniciativa foi um sucesso, esta Júnior Empresa apresenta actualmente um volume de negócios de um milhão e meio de euros por ano. Entretanto o modelo foi implementado um pouco por toda a parte, existem cerca de 300 Júnior Empresas na Europa, 700 no Brasil, e já existem algumas iniciativas similares em África.

Portugal conta actualmente com 16 Júnior Empresas de norte a sul do país. A primeira Júnior empresa surgiu em 1991 mas o verdadeiro boom a nível nacional deu-se a partir de 2005/2006 momento a partir do qual se criaram a maioria das Júnior Empresas agora existentes…

The Pidgin “IRSSI Features” Plugin Will Spam Your Friends

The Pidgin IRSSI Features plugin by Gary Kramlich and John Bailey contains a hard-coded “Easter Egg” which will spam all open conversation with a “Happy New Year!” message if Pidgin is running at midnight January 1st. John Bailey has confirmed this “feature” is intentional. The behavior is present in the pidgin-plugin-pack package for Ubuntu. It has apparently been part of the plugin since its inception.

Some may find this easter egg as whimisical as its authors apparently intended. Personally, I find it to be an unprofessional abuse of my IM credentials and identity. When we as users turn our logins and passwords over to a social software client, we implicitly trust that software to safeguard our our identity. There is a reason people get irate when a Twitter app spams all their friends with messages without their express permission. Impersonating a user and spamming their friends is a violation of trust.

I’ve just released something that I’ve been working on the past few months. It started out as a way to learn iPhone development but then the idea got stuck in my head as something that might just be useful to a lot of people, so I’ve decided to complete the project and release it as a paid app on the App Store.

A Breath Mint for your Vagina?

Jen Phillips, at Mother Jones, wrote a great essay on a new product called Linger, an “internal feminine flavoring.” Literally, a breath mint for your vagina. How literally? Literally.

Here’s a couple screen shots from the website:

The company is, of course, trying to convince women that their vaginas need a breath mint. The mint “improves the length and quality of oral sex” because the person performing it is disgusted by the taste of you. Otherwise, why would a mint help?

And that’s problematic enough, but at least the product is actually a real product designed for vaginas, right? Right?

Nope.

Phillips, curious, ordered some. Suspiciously, the tin of vagina mints looked a lot like tins of, well, mints:

“And guess what?” she writes, “That’s what it is.”

A little digging revealed that Linger is made/distributed by a company called Admints, which just happens to make trade show mints. And the Linger samples just happen to have have the exact same shape, taste, and ingredients as Admint’s sample mints. So how does Linger manage to pass off breath mints as vaginal Tic Tacs in $7.99 packs? Despite the salacious creation story and testimonials on its site (”It gets a little warm as it starts to dissolve which took just under an hour. Then, it is SO good!!”), the mint is labeled “for novelty use only.” This is a common practice in the sex-products industry, explains Charlie Glickman, the education program manager at Good Vibrations. It gives manufacturers some cover if something goes awry, he explains. “They could say, ‘It’s just a novelty toy. You weren’t actually expecting to use this were you?’” And if you actually do expect to use Linger to “flavor the woman in a manner that is safe and effective,” be warned: its primary ingredient is sugar, which is not safe for the vagina. It messes up the pH and can lead to a really painful yeast infection, a condition that definitely doesn’t make someone want to “linger.”

(Checks and Balances). As caixas são os vários actores do panorama político e as setas identificam quem responde perante quem.

O truque para chegar ao nirvana metafísico é identificar quem não responde perante ninguém; logo não é responsabilizado, não pode ser responsabilizado e é portanto irresponsável.

R2-D2 Located in Star Trek 2009

Apparently, there was a rumor floating around that if you watched closely one of the scenes in Star Trek 2009, you could actually spot R2-D2 slowly drifting into space. Well folks, that isn’t a rumor anymore and has been confirmed by one of the movie’s sequence supervisors. Check it out:
